Third Annual SFOC Wildlife Photo Contest

October 2010

After a few years’ hiatus, the SFOC Wildlife Photo Contest is coming back this year. Thanks to the generosity of The Camera Company of Norwood, we now have the resources to restart these popular annual contests.

The contest opens November 1, 2010, and closes November 30, 2011. Winners will be announced after the December 2011 judging. The contest is year-long to allow for a maximum representation of species. If you have a question, please call 781-784-4625, or e-mail Kurt Buermann. Contest rules and guidelines follow.

Intent, Prizes, Judging

Hawk with Prey by Judith Phillips The purpose of the contest is to depict wildlife and uncommon native plants within the Town of Sharon as well as to increase interest in our natural surroundings. The contest will have two divisions: Animals and Native Plants. Animals can include insects or even microscopic creatures. Plants should be native to the area and the more unusual, the better.

The goals of the contest are to appreciate and record the diversity of living things in Sharon and to become more involved with the Town’s natural world and have fun.

We are uncertain of the prizes to be awarded. Rest assured they will be magnificent! (One year the Grand Prize was a gift certificate to Alice’s Mandarin Taste restaurant as well as silver picture frames.) All entries will go on permanent display in the Sharon Conservation Commission’s office at the Community Center. In addition they will be made digital and featured on a CD-ROM. Entries will be featured on the SFOC Web site, in local newspapers, and in the SFOC newsletter.

One contest division will be judged by a panel of adults and children. David Grasfield, an adult judge, once remarked of the younger judges: “We probably couldn’t have reached agreement without them. At times, we saw skill and they saw beauty. We should never lose that perspective.”

Guidelines

Fox Family by Judy Bressler• This contest is open to all—young and old, residents and non-residents of Sharon.

• This contest has two divisions:

  1. Animals (includes fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals)
  2. Plants (less common wild plants that are native to New England)

• All photos must be taken within the Town of Sharon.

• With your entries, please note the general area in Sharon where picture was taken. (We may withhold general area information if the species is very rare or threatened.)

• Judges will weigh entries on two basic criteria: artistry and rarity of the subject. For example, a well-composed picture of a crow might be on a par with a less artistic picture of a golden winged warbler.

• Maximum print size: 5” x 7”. If larger, our printing service will reduce to 5” x 7”.

• Multi-photo sheets or collages are acceptable.

• You may submit multiple entries.

• Entries become the property of Sharon Friends of Conservation. Copyrights go to both SFOC and the photo entrant.
