YCOMP Composting Initiative

April 26, 2011

To whom it may concern,

Hello, our names are Matthew Ostrow and Vineeta Nangia and we are currently Juniors at Sharon High School in Sharon, MA. Since September 2010, we have been working to establish a non-profit organization focused on home-composting, or the biodegradation of organic matter in compost bins located on premise. We aim to promote home-composting and other composting related endeavors throughout the state of Massachusetts by distributing subsidized compost bins to consumers under MA state contract FAC61 and working to implement according composting programs. Moreover, we would like to organize educational programs and promote state-composting resources on an inter-town and individual school basis, encourage small businesses to use home-composting bins, and work with colleges, universities, and other organizations and institutions.

A few of our specific goals include developing composting pilot programs for all public schools in Sharon, promoting composting in public facilities and businesses in Sharon, and forming an easily accessible method of receiving and distributing bins. We are also working to create an off-site composting pilot program in Sharon, which would allow for organic material to be transported to a composting facility in a method similar to trash collection. Once we have established a sustainable composting program in Sharon, we plan on expanding our efforts throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

By promoting home-composting, we are working to create a “greener” environment. Composting provides various environmental benefits including the reduction of both methane and carbon dioxide emissions caused from the decomposition of organic material in landfills and the incineration of waste. Increased composting also has economic benefits as reduction of waste increases landfill longevity. Because our organization will initially focus on Sharon, it will work to promote town-wide bonding of residents of all ages towards a common cause, prevent pollution in local and nearby communities, and educate all generations about composting, waste disposal, recycling, and environmental issues.

If you would be interested in making a tax-deductible donation through the Sharon Friends of Conservation that will directly fund our efforts (please see our estimated expenses below), you may use the DONATION button below or send a check to Sharon Friends of Conservation.
